How to Get Involved in The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

The Big Garden Birdwatch will run from Friday 26th - Sunday 28th January

To help you get prepared, why not create some inviting treats for the birds when they visit your garden... Follow the steps below to create a tasty bird feeder!

This activity can be done inside or outside!

  • Toilet roll tubes
  • String or wool
  • Peanut butter
  • Bird Seed
  • A tray or shallow bucket
  • Something to spread the peanut butter with – a blunt knife/spoon/ice lolly stick.

The video above from Regina Toilet Paper is a great example of how to follow the steps below:

Step 1

Sprinkle the seeds onto you tray or into your shallow bucket

Step 2

Using your tool of choice to spread peanut butter all over the outside of the cardboard tube. You’ll need good coverage so make sure you use lots of peanut butter!

Step 3

Roll the peanut butter covered toilet roll tube into the seeds. The best way to do this is to put a finger into each end of the tube and roll it back and forth. You can then use your fingers to sprinkle seeds onto any gaps.

Step 4

Cut a length of string or wool and thread to through the tube. Tie a generous loop.

Step 5

Explore your garden and find a branch to hang your bird feeder from. Be sure to watch out and see if the birds come and have a tasty snack!
