What's in My Child’s Forest School Bag?
If your child is starting forest school, you might be wondering what exactly they need to take with them. Forest school is all about learning through outdoor play and exploration. Whether they’re bug-hunting, puddle-jumping or building dens, being prepared is key.
At Wet Wednesdays, we know a thing or two about dressing for the outdoors. So, here is a helpful guide to what should be in your kid’s forest school bag, plus a few tips to help you feel you and your little ones feel ready.
1. Waterproof Outerwear
Top of the list: waterproofs! Forest school doesn’t stop for drizzle or downpours, so a properly waterproof jacket and trousers or an all-in-one puddle suit is essential.
Top Tip: Look for a waterproof rating of at least 10,000mm so your little explorer stays dry and comfy.

2. Wellies or Waterproof Boots
From muddy trails to woodland streams, proper footwear is a must. A pair of wellies will keep little feet dry and protected. Plus, don’t forget thick socks or a couple for warmth! Or we recommend a pair of wellies with a thermal liner for the Autumn and Winter.

3. Spare Clothes
Yes, they’ll get muddy, but that is the point!

Pack a full change of clothes: top, bottoms, socks, underwear in a dry bag.
Bonus: Add a labelled plastic bag for soggy stuff to come home in.
4. Gloves, Hat & Layers
Even if the sun is shining now, forest school can get chilly under the trees or after a splashy adventure. Keep a lightweight fleece, hat and a pair of waterproof gloves in the bag. These are especially in spring, autumn and winter.
Top Tip: Layering is your friend! See our guide to dressing for forest school for more tips.
5. Water Bottle & Snack
Outdoor play is hungry and thirsty work. Pop in a labelled, reusable water bottle and a healthy snack if allowed by your setting.
Try fruit, flapjacks or rice cakes, these options are mess-free and energy-boosting!

Check with your forest school leader about allergy policies before packing food.
TOP TIP
Make sure your child has a small & comfortable bag.
Forest school bags should be lightweight, and child sized. Choose a backpack that’s big enough for all the essentials, but not so big it gets in the way. Bonus points if it’s waterproof too!
Pro Parent Tip: Let your child help pack, this will make them feel proud and prepared!
