The best playgrounds are fun all year round, whatever the weather! As long as you have the appropriate clothing of course. Playgrounds are an opportunity for children to have fun and learn at the same time. Kids can practice many key skills such as hand/eye coordination and balance but also socials skills and problem solving too.
To help get your babies, toddlers, kids and teens get outdoors, we’ve found the 10 best playgrounds in the UK! Some of them even have free entry:

This playground is a fun experience, and it’s not just for children. Adventure Play is a unique, hand-crafted adventure playground at Windsor Great Park. Hidden within the woodland next to The Savill Garden, you’ll discover a fascinating world of walkways, slides, sculptures and treehouses.

This play zone at Windsor Great Park opened in July 2023. Since then it has brought people of all ages closer to nature and stimulated their senses. A rustic, hand- crafted play area made from almost entirely wood! It has everything you need for a couple hours of fun. Sessions come in two-hour slots, and it is recommended that you pre-book before you visit.

This magical, whimsical farm has six main zones for children to explore. The main play zones are called Huff & Puff for adventure play, Fairy Dell for a themed play area and Rapunzel’s Kingdom the new indoor play zone. We love this for adventure play! They are one of the only UK attractions designed to with disabled children in mind first.
The Huff and Puff adventure playground has climbing structures, a rubber duck pump-powered waterway, a giant combine harvester and giant skittles. They also have the nest swing as well as a wheelchair swing! We would recommend getting tickets online as they are a little bit cheaper or take advantage of being a pass holder.

Over 40 acres of adventure play to explore, there is a wide range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. The outdoor adventure playground is called Enchanted Forest, and the indoor playground is called Playhive.

The Enchanted Forest has so much opportunity for imaginative play, with a teepee hut, climbing nets, tunnels, bridges, zip wires and slides. The outdoor play area is huge! With plenty of room for children to run, explore and learn. Then once you are all done playing outdoors, the Playhive is one of Europe’s largest indoor playgrounds. Also featuring a wide range of play space for children, this interactive indoor play area has something for everyone to enjoy.

Although this play area is right next door to an amazing lido; children will have so much fun outdoors in this exciting play area. Plus, it is completely free! This adventure playground is open all year round and have plenty of imaginative play for kids. The play area has swings, slides, seesaws, plus climbing and balancing equipment.
There is a lot of local pride and national heritage associated with Ynysangharad Park, it even features a mock structure depicting the Pontypridd Railway Station. The play area also features a modern, visitor centre. You could bring your own picnic along; however, The Waffle House has a tasty menu, and it is only in the lido building next to the play park!

BeWILDerwood is a treehouse adventure on a new scale! With another site based in Chesire. This playground is full of award-winning family fun, with zip wires, climbing structures, slides, tunnels, mazes and a storey telling stage. There is a wide range of fun to be had across this treehouse play zone! From Google reviews we can see that many parents agree that is fantastic value for money and you can stay there all day once you have purchased tickets.

Parking is free, and they are added a Munch Bar in 2025 for hot and cold food, or a hot coffee after a full day of fun! Alternatively, you can bring along your own snacks or picnic.

This adventure playground is full of fun for children up to 12 years, plus they have a separate area for toddlers, under 5 years. A place for your little ones imagination to run wild, there is a range of different play elements for the kids. They have bridges, slides, climbing walls, jumping pillows and tunnels! The giant treetop fort is a firm favourite for little legs and there are many mini wooden forts throughout the Sky Maze and Mini Maze. The area for toddlers and pre-schoolers is called the Mini Maze play area.

It is recommended to book in advance, and they have peak and off-peak pricing. The play zones at Fort Douglas are designed for interactive play so parents, grandparents and carers can join in too.

Folly Farm is a fun filled place for the whole family to spend the day. As well as all of the animals on the farm, they have built amazing outdoor playgrounds. Perfect to entertain the children, the Pirate Adventure outdoor play space is full of role play! There are huge pirate ships, slides, tubes, rope walks and a fort with climbing ropes. Once your kids have had their fun as a pirate, they could also visit the Destruction playground. Full of diggers and construction themed, sand pit fun. Or they could visit the farm play area, full of farm-themed outdoor play.

It is recommended to prebook tickets as you will need a time slot. Folly Farm is a popular attraction in Wales and was voted “Best Day Out in Wales” and “Best Family Attraction in the UK”.

8. Animal Wood at Castlewellan Forest Park, Northern Ireland.

Animal Wood is ideal for children aged four to eleven years, located right next to the Peace Maze. There is a short path which provides lots of imaginative fun for kids. They could play on the wild wooden animals, including a badger in its den, a red squirrel and a giant spider. There is also a wooden play tower which has a climbing wall, fireman’s pole and a rope bridge to keep the kids entertained.

Families that have visited have enjoyed the beautiful surrounding forest and the lake is a great spot for a picnic. The addition of the maze with the kids outdoor play area is a firm favourite.

9. Lilidorei, The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland.

The Alnwick Garden has the most magical fun in Lilidorei. This place is a mysterious village where nine clans worship Christmas all year round. This is the perfect spot for imaginative, roleplaying with the little ones. They can take part in the daily activities, join in on the stories with the story keeper and play in the world’s largest play structure!

To play at Lilidorei, they recommend coming dressed for the weather, so this could be waterproofs and warm clothing, to sun cream and sun hats. The play structure is 26m high, but it has been specifically designed so children of different ability are able to play safely. The slides are fun for the children that don’t mind height, as the slide starts 24m high!

Lappa Valley not only has a fun outdoor adventure playground, but it also has the only steam train ride for families in Cornwall! They also have boat rides, pedalo swans, trampolines, a toddler path maze and an indoor soft play. If you’re feeling hungry after all of that, there is a café full of home-cooked meals. This place is a firm favourite with families that have a dog, as you can bring your four-legged friends along for £1 (they must be kept on a lead.)

The adventure playground has slides, a fort, seesaw, roundabout and a sand pit with JCB diggers! With so much fun to be had and equipment where kids can use their imagination. We also love the accessibility for wheelchair access at Lappa Valley and their awareness of Sensory issues and ASD. If you let them know any special requests in advance, they are very helpful to support you and help you have a comfortable day out.
